Guildhall Library Aldermanbury EC2V 7HH An exhibition charting the history of Roman archaeology in London, and the sites and artefacts relating to Roman London. It highlights the pioneering work of London antiquary Charles Roach-Smith, and illuminates the history of the Museum of London's predecessor, the Guildhall Museum. Royal Asiatic Society 14 Stephenson Way London A small display in the Reading Room of the Royal Asiatic Society features a selection of archaeologist and explorer Aurel Stein's photographs. Hungarian-born Stein undertook extensive expeditions to Central Asia and China in the early 20th century, and the photographs on display are a selection from over 800 Stein images in the Society's archive. Leighton House Museum 12 Holland Park Road London Victorian artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema produced many works that illustrated life in the Classical world. The exhibition will take visitors through Alma-Tadema's life and work, and the influence that his art continues to have on our perception of the classical world today. 16 May 2016 6-6.30pm, Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology Juliette Desplat (The National Archives) Juliette Desplat will discuss the Cairo-based Arab Bureau as part of the context of First World War intelligence operations, and the role of archaeologists in its history. Following the talk will be the opening of the Different Perspectives exhibition at the Petrie Museum, which draws on the research of the Heritage Lottery Fund-funded Different Perspectives project. UK Cinema Release from 21 April 2017 Letters from Baghdad (2016) is a documentary about Gertrude Bell and her work as an archaeologist, writer, traveller, diplomat and political mover-and-shaker in Iraq. It premiered at the London Film Festival in October. Actor Tilda Swinton is the voice of Gertrude Bell, with dialogue from her letters and diaries. The documentary uses a wide range of vintage film footage showing Britain and the Middle East from the early 20th century. Letters from Baghdad is directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum. This talk will re-enact some of the lectures Petrie gave during the First World War. You are invited to come dressed up, join in the war effort, and knit some socks for our boys.
